Who is this Visioluxus person in the comic? Just a totally fab photographer I’ve had the pleasure of working with a few times. She’s selling prints of my totally sweet ass wrapped in tentacles, if you’re into that kinda thing.
Eep! And I forgot to mention: Specimen7 has been one of my favorite places to pick up crazy little tentacle creature sculptures (which is where I got the one that appears in the third panel!)

Important Announcement

Tentacles are super cool. I pretty much want to do a graphic novel that’s just page after page of Mignola-style tentacles, with whatever bare minimum of plot will get me from one tentacle to the next.
December 15th, 2009 at 12:33 am
I totally have the same “fetish” for octopi, squids, and tentacles in general.
They have been cropping up in my artwork more and more of late.

Just saying.
December 15th, 2009 at 2:17 am
you’ll probably love this, then: http://bit.ly/4VUs82 (it’s octopuses in coconut shells, super cute!)
December 15th, 2009 at 2:19 am
Weird, I’ve been following visioluxus on deviant art for many many years. Small world huh.
December 15th, 2009 at 2:24 am
I want a octopus tattoo on my shoulder sooo badly. You always manage to remind me of that. You maybe even inspired that… I loved that photo shoot and I adore the way you draw them. (omg, the one in the first panel is SO cool!)
December 15th, 2009 at 3:19 am
I’m still undecided on octos. Arachnophobia kinda makes it hard for me to like anything with 8 appendages, but I really love the way you draw the tentacles all curling around themselves. I think that makes it easier to ignore the 8 “legs” aspect, cuz you make them look beautiful.
December 15th, 2009 at 3:28 am
Holy Crap I am so glad it’s not just me. I love to collect all things cephalopod (does that make me a cephalophile?) which un-nerves my Cthulhu-fearing boyfriend to no end. <3

You’re definitely not alone! I’m in art school now and people in my classes have done tons of shit with octopi in them. They’re cool looking little dudes.
December 15th, 2009 at 7:19 am
Fantastic – I was just looking for the tentacle pictures again last week and couldn’t find them!
December 15th, 2009 at 7:39 am
D’awww the first panel. I love how its tentacles are all wrapped around each other. <3 And the photos turned out amazing!
December 15th, 2009 at 8:18 am
You’ve seen this then? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8408233.stm
December 15th, 2009 at 8:33 am
Have you seen the clip of the octopuses that have worked out how to carry coconuts? It’s really kinda cute :P
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUN6c5yWJhQ
There was a longer video (about 2 minutes rather than 1) on the BBC website, but I don’t know if that’ll work in America (it might. Not sure if it runs on the iplayer system which doesn’t work in America) it’s easy enough to find if you want to try though :)
December 15th, 2009 at 8:36 am
THAT’S YOU in the naked tentacle picture? I LOVE THAT PHOTO SO MUCH!
December 15th, 2009 at 8:51 am
You’ll love this, then… http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8408233.stm super tool-using octopodes.

Oh holy geez. I did not know that was you in the Visioluxus tentacle photos. I love them even more now. =D
December 15th, 2009 at 9:04 am
wut. I didn’t say anything :-P Hey, whatever makes a person happy. Diversity is the spice of life and all that. Love your comic, by the way. Makes my wife and I laugh :)
December 15th, 2009 at 9:05 am
God Damn Erika!! You are SO Hot you might have given me a fetish for tentacles just from those nude pics!! (Rereading that sounds a little creepy but you have an amazing body!)

December 15th, 2009 at 11:21 am
I like how happy Matt looks in panel 5.
December 15th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
From one tentacle/octopi fetishist to another, I see nothing wrong with that. Had I the money, I would have bought your sculpted tentacles. And I adored your pwnie!
December 15th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
I was going to post the link to the coconut-carrying octopus but it looks like a dozen people have already done just that…
I too find octopuses fascinating. They are basically a big brain with prehensile appendages – just like us. They can learn lots of tricks (it’s very hard to keep them in a tank)… If they had a longer lifespan (even the biggers species don’t live longer than 4-5 years), they would already be making tools and building cities.

You know, that makes a lot of sense.
December 15th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Oh man. I LOVE octopuses. My favorite is the blue ringed octopus http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0cnXYhlBk1k/SKL3h6Vc0wI/AAAAAAAABuo/G20Mhy8U6T4/s400/Blue+ringed+octopus.jpg so pretty. . . .
December 15th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
just read the whole contents of this comic start to finish and now super excited to read through your other comics. fabulous!
also, i’m a big fan of all things cephalopod as well! yay!
December 15th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
I giggled with delight at this ( I love the way you drew me btw, I feel that Phillip is on the receiving end of that look on my face ALOT). Yep, you have a fetish for sure.
December 15th, 2009 at 2:44 pm

December 15th, 2009 at 3:36 pm

Octopi are crazy fun! And your collection is absolutely brilliant. Gorgeous, is a better word!
And you draw them so well, too! They’re all so cute~.

I have a fetish for giant squid, Humboldt squid, octopi, and humpback whales :D
December 15th, 2009 at 11:45 pm
I’m right with you. I took a Oceanography class years ago & we took a couple fieldtrips to tidepools where there were octopuses (octopi? octopod?). I really wanted to touch one. It turns out they have beaks so I got bit, but it was still pretty cool.
December 16th, 2009 at 12:12 am
I am exactly the same way! Except I haven’t posed in a nude tentacle photoshoot… yet.
December 16th, 2009 at 12:13 am
This is news to anyone? ;D

December 16th, 2009 at 2:52 am
Damn. Looks like I have a tentacle fetish to. I also love they way they feel. I played with a tiny octopus once on a field trip, it’s so slimy. And the little suckers are so cute <3 <3
December 16th, 2009 at 6:27 am
Hey Erica, the National Zoo website has an octco-cam, a camera in the octopus tank. The first time I looked at it, I watched for a really long time as this red octopus twirled his tentacles around and around. So coool………..
December 16th, 2009 at 7:04 am
I am very sad at the end of Dar. I resonate with so many of the things you’ve put in this comic that it seems like you’re opening my head and looking around in it. I am glad that it is a positive thing for you, but so sad. Selfish me!
December 16th, 2009 at 9:51 am
Dude Octopi are awesome. I saw an article about some that collect coconut halves and use them as homes. They had a picture of a Octopus in his coconut home, peeking out between the halves. It was the cutest thing ever. EVER
December 16th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
Hah! I love that like ten people posted the same link to that news article!

:)
I like them too.
I’ve wanted to get a tattoo for ages, but can’t find the right tattoo artist or exactly what I want.
But when I do it’s going to be a colorful amazing gigantic thing on my shoulder
December 17th, 2009 at 5:35 am
Ah, yes, Octopi. They are exquisite, and delicious, two things that normally don’t seem to go together…
Anyway, in case I don’t do it later (or maybe I want to do it twice), thank you so much for the comics. I’ve only been reading for the past year, but it’s been fantastic in that short time. Thank you for giving us what you did.
December 17th, 2009 at 9:53 am
Erika! Please do a CalenDAR for 2010!
December 17th, 2009 at 10:09 am
Hey, will be sad to see you go, but I am excited to see what your new projects will be!
On a side noe, this made me think of you (related to the most recent comic): http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter09/PATTtentacular.php
December 17th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
To be honest, I theorise that women natrually perfer curvy shapes and men prefer straight (usually symmetrical) shapes. I personally draw a crap-load of spirals and swirls, or anything that flows.
The way you draw tentacles is truely amazing though; the level of perfect simple detail (i.e. it isn’t a lololcirclesonflabbytriangle nor a technical manual) and absolute symmetry is beautiful and sublime. If all that research has lead to your perfect renditions, then it is extremely well spent!
December 17th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
I read through the archives instead of studying today. Sad to see it ending. It was awesome watching your relationship progress. I’m still at the stage with my transboy where I don’t like the word “boyfriend.” Maybe I’ll grow out of it too. It’s complicated by the fact that I’m also trans and the more masculine of us. Hm.
December 17th, 2009 at 4:40 pm
I hope no one takes this the wrong way, but the way that you’re using fetish here… it’s exactly the same way that furries have a “Fetish”… I may be directing people to this comic to make that point!
Also.. awesome comic!!
December 17th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
Aw, I’m gonna miss reading about your wild adventures. :( I’m definitely gonna read your new comics though!
December 18th, 2009 at 6:45 am
No love for octopuses as animals? Way to objectify. ;) (No, but really, they’re super bright. They’re the only non-mammals with enough personality that aquarium staff consistently name them. They can recognize shapes and see the polarity of light with their awesome W shaped pupils, too. They’re also freaky devoted moms.)
Tentacle shoot is beautiful, but dead octos always leave me a little cold. It would be like posing with dead kittens to me.
December 18th, 2009 at 9:30 am
Yes, tentacles are great. Unfortunately, my OCD prevents me from enjoying them to the fullest. I can’t help but notice that the word “Dictionary” falls on the back cover of the book. Oh wait, perhaps it’s Japanese or some other right to left reading country? I feel better about it now. Keep up the good work.
December 18th, 2009 at 10:41 am
As I dive I totally concur. They are fascinating and I have spent entire dives just watching a single creature. Cuttlefish are amazing too. If you love the little critters you might consider taking up diving.
Love the comic and as the father of a dyke you and your comic have touched me many times. Many thanks for the love you have put into your art.
December 18th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
dude i’ve totally seen that photo with the tentacles…. i love it!
oh also i never mentioned that i got those prints my friend ordered for my birthday ( around october )…. THANKS ERIKA they are my favourite EVER and are hanging above my door right now C:
December 22nd, 2009 at 8:22 pm
Oh man…me too…I even got a big-ass tattoo of one.
December 26th, 2009 at 10:48 am
This comic is funnier if you read Matt’s part in a really posh accent. I also like that he always has a dictionary within arm’s reach. It’s like Hammer Space for the pedant.
