What? I’ve been out of portland too long. I remember the….cleanliness cops (can’t think of the name off hand) cops on horses, cops in cars, cops on bikes, but on Segways? Since when? Jeez, I’ve missed out!
Our Public Safety patrol at RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) go around on Segways as well. The first time I saw it I thought it was some kind of performance art.
er…sorry, but a Segway’s top speed is 12.5 (twelve point five) mph, NOT 125. Anybody, police or otherwise falling off something going one hundred twenty five mph would at minimum lose all their skin, and most probably be killed. They only go about as fast as somebody running (not sprinting) But for getting around sightseeing or shopping in a city, or if your job requires you to move around and be ready (like police), they are just the ticket. Good comic, keep it up, thanks.
Chicago cops are HILARIOUS on those things. They have the whole four wheeling tire action on them as well. They also have Segway rentals for the day that go along with a tour etc etc.
Fine for a small place, but it’d be useless for Sydney, where they’d need something faster and better able to negotiate hills, slopes, and real distance. University security has electric bicycles, for the sake of the steeper hills, though, so perhaps for that small area… One wonders what they’d do for staircases and unsealed walkways though.
this strip brought tears to my eyes…literally! i guess its an actual thing but imagining it as an actual thing is even more hillarious!!! your brilliant!
haha I work at a hospital and the hospital police ride their segways down the halls. I’m always waiting for one of them to clock their head on the door frame.
I live in Spain and in my town policemen do ride Segways as well. When I first saw it I thought it was some kind of joke, seriously. But man, they look SO cool!
It is a joke between a friend and me that one day we will steal two segways and either A) have the greatest round of bumper cars ever, or B) have an epic joust battle. Either way, it ends up with us in a highway police chase (us still on the segways). X3
I love this comic…and it furthers my impulse to steal a segway. BRILLANT! :D
I’ve seen some of the cops here in Denver and a few up in Boulder use a Segway. ESPECIALLY during the Democratic National Convention last year when the downtown area became a veritable police state.
This is by far my favorite one so far. I found the comic from the link on Penny Arcade and I’ve been reading through the archives :). This made me lol so hard!
Reminds me of a movie I dreamed up with some friends. It’d be starring Samuel L Jackson as an aging airport security boss in a not-so-distant future where segway troops rule the airports with an iron fist and crime is nonexistent.
However, one day a group of terrorists attack as they’ve discovered the one weakness of the system. The might of the segway fall apart before an enemy never imagined. . .STAIRS.
We have a cop on a seqway in Port Angeles, a small town in NW Washington, but he’s the sidewalk cop. He tells people not to use wheeled contrivances on the sidewalk… while standing on a seqway. SO Lame.
They also have them in the Mississippi airport. They look very menacing.

police use segways in Holland too… but you don’see them too often on the streets…
Chicago has them too…but they don’t do much with them. I actually saw a couple of them racing, and have a crashing contest one time.
I love how the Segway cop apparently comes in through the windshield, then ends up on top of the car. (:
Except for an mildly steep curb, saw that take one to the ground here in Albuquerque :)

Mike, that missing decimal point was added in for the print version :)
oh man. we have those here in calexico too

Middle panel made me laugh HARD!!
i have the exact opposite opinion of them. My campus has ‘em, and one woke me up thinking i was a hobo when i took a nap outside freshman year.
we also now have the three wheeled segways for our cops.

Brilliant!!!
I love this place
They just make me think of Gob Bluth.
Wow, hard to imagine anyone outside of the anime/computer/general nerdiness conventions that I adore riding one of those, lol.

Apparently Segways were designed by Jack Kamens son, the guy who drew loads of those EC horror comics…fheh, I thought it was interesting, anyway…
i just moved to Portland not too long ago and when i first saw one of these i was in utter disbelief. I didn’t know whether to laugh or not.
